Myerstone Internet Multimedia and Taiwan’s National Museum
of Marine Biology & Aquarium (NMMBA) have launched a joint
project to conduct the global first pilot of PDA Wireless
Navigation System for museums and exhibition institutes. |
 |
The NMMBA, which has long been aimed at becoming the most complete
marine and aquatic museum in
Taiwan, and to assume the responsibility to assist
academic research and educate young students through the
entertaining exhibition. In 2002 , the NMMBA’s visitors figures has hit a record high, and reach 2.5
millions visited the museum. As a result, it is quite significant
for the museum to find out a more efficient way to provide a
better tour guide service for its visitors. |
As the first wireless application project under the Taiwan government’s guidance, this project will draw attention to the
information technology community, and the NMMBA will be considered as one of the most popular Hot Spot Location in Taiwan. By
utilizing wireless LAN (Local Area Networks) Myerstone's mobility service will enable the NMMBA’s visitors (PDA users) to obtain a
wide range of rich media content including static graphic and text data, video clips, Flash animations, and MP3 audio files when they
are exploring the museum’s exhibition, all the information of fish ecology is instantly available for viewing. This revolutionary
museum wireless navigation project was so successful and has been received inquiries by many other museums in Taiwan.
Myerstone’s PDA Wireless Navigation
System featuring the technology integration of Mobile Internet and
Location Based Service, the system solution including the design
of web interface, multimedia database, digital content, PDA
operating system, and the integration of wireless devices and
equipments, as well as the construction of wireless environment by
using Location Based Service technology which will allow the
museum’s handheld device user to seamlessly accessing wireless LAN
and freely retrieve multimedia information provided. In addition,
a robust business model and e-commerce system for this project is
also well designed, it would allows handheld device user to
browser the travel information and online business services in the
museum area and nearby resort city by accessing the WLAN or GPRS.
In this project, there is a wide range of
factors seem to contribute to the success, including : Web Server,
Data Base Server, Video Stream server, Radius Server, 3G/GPRS
Roaming System and Mobile IP etc. The RADIUS servers that are
based on the IEEE security standard 802.1x and are designed to
handle WLAN access control and security and the Mobile IP enables
mobile handheld devices to stay connected to the Internet
regardless of their location and without changing their IP
address. |
 |
“The Wireless Navigation System will be
able to creating the possibility for the museum’s visitors to
personalize and enhance their experiences to explore the museum
with various wireless devices such PDA, Tablet PC and Note Book.”
Phyllis Chou, the CEO of Myerstone Internet Multimedia Inc. said,
“ Though the use of the museum wireless navigation system, it will
make family visits more comfortable.
|
I believe that museums are good places
for interactive learning that give families an opportunity to
explore and learn their own knowledge, from now on, parents can
serves as tour guide for their children at their own pace and at
their own interest topics just simply click
on their PDA or other mobile devices. This system will
work as a virtual tour guide in NMMBA museum. “ She
