Museum Wireless Navigation System

     Myerstone Internet Multimedia and Taiwan’s National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium (NMMBA) have launched a joint project to conduct the global first pilot of PDA Wireless Navigation System for museums and exhibition institutes.

     The NMMBA, which has long been aimed at becoming the most complete marine and aquatic museum in Taiwan, and to assume the responsibility to assist academic research and educate young students through the entertaining exhibition. In 2002 , the NMMBA’s visitors figures has hit a record high, and reach 2.5 millions visited the museum. As a result, it is quite significant for the museum to find out a more efficient way to provide a better tour guide service for its visitors.

     As the first wireless application project under the Taiwan government’s guidance, this project will draw attention to the information technology community, and the NMMBA will be considered as one of the most popular Hot Spot Location in Taiwan. By utilizing wireless LAN (Local Area Networks) Myerstone's mobility service will enable the NMMBA’s visitors (PDA users) to obtain a wide range of rich media content including static graphic and text data, video clips, Flash animations, and MP3 audio files when they are exploring the museum’s exhibition, all the information of fish ecology is instantly available for viewing. This revolutionary museum wireless navigation project was so successful and has been received inquiries by many other museums in Taiwan.


      Myerstone’s PDA Wireless Navigation System featuring the technology integration of Mobile Internet and Location Based Service, the system solution including the design of web interface, multimedia database, digital content, PDA operating system, and the integration of wireless devices and equipments, as well as the construction of wireless environment by using Location Based Service technology which will allow the museum’s handheld device user to seamlessly accessing wireless LAN and freely retrieve multimedia information provided. In addition, a robust business model and e-commerce system for this project is also well designed, it would allows handheld device user to browser the travel information and online business services in the museum area and nearby resort city by accessing the WLAN or GPRS.

     In this project, there is a wide range of factors seem to contribute to the success, including : Web Server, Data Base Server, Video Stream server, Radius Server, 3G/GPRS Roaming System and Mobile IP etc. The RADIUS servers that are based on the IEEE security standard 802.1x and are designed to handle WLAN access control and security and the Mobile IP enables mobile handheld devices to stay connected to the Internet regardless of their location and without changing their IP address.

     “The Wireless Navigation System will be able to creating the possibility for the museum’s visitors to personalize and enhance their experiences to explore the museum with various wireless devices such PDA, Tablet PC and Note Book.” Phyllis Chou, the CEO of Myerstone Internet Multimedia Inc. said, “ Though the use of the museum wireless navigation system, it will make family visits more comfortable.

     I believe that museums are good places for interactive learning that give families an opportunity to explore and learn their own knowledge, from now on, parents can serves as tour guide for their children at their own pace and at their own interest topics just simply click on their PDA or other mobile devices. This system will work as a virtual tour guide in NMMBA museum. “ She explained.
